beginning sketchbook assignments

Sketchbook assignments spring: On an altered page in your sketchbook in pen or pencil or other media. Each sketch must fill a page in your sketchbook ( i.e. use the entire surface area), show thoughtful time spent, execution and craft. You can choose anyone to do and in any order BUT one must be completed each weekend or during the week for homework.


Sketchbook cover: create a cover on your sketchbook based on your identity. Media: Cut paper, collage, drawing, painting, words, etc.

Texture study: Close up study of a leaf, tree bark or other organic texture. Any Medium: Cut paper, collage, ink, pencil, watercolor, colored pencil, mixed media.

Drapery Study: Study of a piece of clothing or cloth that shows wrinkles, Carefully observe the tonal changes: light areas and shadows: Your goal is to make it look Three dimensional and realistic. Do this one on a light wash.

Advertisement of Yourself: what would you like to say about yourself. Use mixed media to create an advertisement or logo, Street Art.

Collage: A family portrait: A grouping of photos of you and your family with words, drawn images, mixed media. Express what you think your family is about. What emotions, etc.

Negative Space: Look at an area in your home and draw the negative shapes of objects in your home ( chairs, lamps, etc.) On another page in their sketchbook copy that composition and add tone, color or pattern.

Draw a Pile of shoes in pen: observe the texture and shoe laces using cross hatch or stippling.

Detail of a portrait photo enlarged: Cut out squares 1” X 1” from a photograph and enlarge it so the largest square 10” X 10”

Photocopied Collage/Mixed Media Face and body parts: Photocopy faces and body parts and create a design with actual drawings you made of these parts. Overlap images of the design.


Each one is due the first class after the weekend.
